Congresswoman Kay Granger Presents Award to Greater Fort Worth Area Civic Leaders Association

The award was for the leadership displayed in the campaign to have a U.S. Navy ship named for Fort Worth. Project Director Dolores Oelfke came up with the idea, and approached four Fort Worth Elementary Schools: Mary Louise Phillips, Westpark, Benbrook, and H.V. Hilbing. She asked the Principals and the first grade teachers, if they would have their first graders draw their vision of the USS Fort Worth, and ask for the ship to be named for our city. Dolores collected the drawings and mailed them to the Deputy Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Navy. The drawings were a big hit at the Pentagon. They had posters made showing the drawings and were signed by the Secretary of Navy and the Deputy Secretary of Defense. These posters were presented to Lyle Oelfke, the principals, and two first grade artists from each of the schools at the October 31st Fort Worth City Council Meeting by Congresswoman Kay Granger. Greater Fort Worth Area Civic Leaders Association Makes Annual Trip to Elementary Schools

For the seventh year, the Civic Leaders visited elementary schools, Friday August 18th. The purpose of the visit was to setup a harship fund at each of the schools visited. The fund is intended to be used by the schools for underprivileged children. Lyle Oelfke said, "that hopefully, the fund will help keep the teachers and the administrators from having to dig so deeply into their own pockets, to help the young children with school supplies, clothing, field trips and more."

Elementary schools visited were: Benbrook, Luella Merrett, Westpark, Western Hills Primary, Mary Louise Phillips, Como, A.M. Pate, and H.V. Helbing.
